Becoming a CNA is already an exciting process but you can take your career to the next level with additional classes to earn your diploma as a certified medication technician. This role takes on many new responsibilities that will surely have you thinking critically and making very important decisions. If you're a CNA that wants to help people take the right medications and document the results of taking those meds, then you should consider becoming a CMT. Many CMTs work in extended care facilities and these are the common things they must do in their role.

Be Familiar with Patient's Vital Signs & Glucose Levels

Before a CMT gives out meds they must know the patient's recent vital signs to ensure they are getting the right medication. You don't want to give high blood pressure medication to someone who doesn't need it!

Prepare Patient Medications

Many long term care or retirement community residents have a long list of medications that they take to keep themselves healthy. It is the CMT's duty to ensure the patient gets the right medications on the right days at the right times. It can be a long process preparing a patients pills, but it is extremely important that they are getting a 100 percent accurate dose according to what their doctor order's.

Dispense Medications According to Doctor's Orders

A CMT dispenses a patient's medications directly according to a doctor's written orders. This means handing the pills to a patient and helping them get them ingested safely and comfortably. It may be up to you to figure out the best way to help a patient take medications, whether with a small bite of food, a drink of water or otherwise.

Evaluate the Patient

After a patient takes their pills a CMT must evaluate them for any negative side effects. This includes monitoring the patient for rashes, tenderness, itching, dizziness, becoming drowsy, and other things. These problems then need to be relayed to the doctor so alternative dosing or other meds may be tried.
